Stu nawróconych na katolicyzm przedstawicieli amerykańskich elit napisało list do uczestników synodu biskupów. Świadczą w nim, że tym co ich przyciągnęło do Kościoła było niezmienne nauczanie prawdy o człowieku, małżeństwie, rodzinie, seksualności i różnicy płci. Nawróceni proszą duchownych, by nie zmieniali fundamentu nauki Chrystusowej.

„Wszyscy przeszliśmy drogę nawrócenia na wiarę katolicką. Niektórzy z nas kiedyś należeli do innych wspólnot chrześcijańskich. Niektórzy nie byli ochrzczeni, wywodzili się z innych religii lub uważali się za agnostyków albo ateistów. Pomimo różnorodności środowisk, z których pochodzimy, łączy nas wspólna cecha: weszliśmy do wspólnoty Kościoła katolickiego jako osoby dorosłe” – czytamy w liście.

Autorzy zaznaczyli, że tym, co ich zachęciło do nawrócenia była niezmienna nauka Kościoła na temat płci, seksualności, małżeństwa oraz rodziny. „Na początku większość z nas sprzeciwiała się przynajmniej niektórym elementom nauczania Kościoła w tych kwestiach. Jednak, gdy zaczęliśmy dostrzegać, jak szkodliwe są skutki popularnych koncepcji na temat ludzkiej seksualności i po tym, jak niektóre nasze zbory zaczęły ustępować w obliczu dominującej kultury – jej wyobrażeń o wolności, równości, postępie i zyskujących na znaczeniu idei gnostyckich – każdy z nas zaczął dostrzegać, że jednak Kościół ma rację w swoim nauczaniu” – stwierdzili konwertyci.

Wyjaśnili, że po uświadomieniu sobie tego faktu, nauczanie Kościoła stało się dla nich „dziwnie atrakcyjne”. Po zgłębieniu doktryny z czasem przekonali się, że „wyraża ono najgłębszą prawdę o nas samych. Prawdę, która jest zarówno dobra  jak i piękna, jakkolwiek wymagająca”.

„Co więcej, niezachwiana pewność Kościoła w nauczaniu – czytamy – i zdecydowane głoszenie tej prawdy, nawet w obliczu wrogiej opozycji, było dla nas dowodem na to, że możemy odnaleźć w niej Jezusa takim, jakim On był naprawdę.”

Autorzy dodali, że to właśnie nauka o ludzkiej egzystencji głoszona przez Kościół w szczególny sposób ich pociągała, ponieważ zyskiwali pewność, iż płynie od samego Jezusa Chrystusa. Chrystusa Wcielonego, który przyjmując postać ludzką „objawił człowiekowi samego siebie”. Ujawnił prawdę o znaczeniu ciała, różnicy płci, seksualności, małżeństwa i rodziny.

Co więcej Chrystus wniósł jeszcze coś nowego do wspólnoty ludzkiej: godność, miłosierdzie, „udział w Jego własnej wierności Kościołowi.” „To nie był przypadek – czytamy w liście – że pierwsi chrześcijanie zaczęli wstępować do Kościoła pociągnięci przykładem życia uczniów Chrystusa, promieniujących życzliwością i dobrocią, zajmujących unikalną postawę wobec kobiet, dzieci, ludzkiej seksualności i małżeństwa. I to nie był przypadek, że wiele wieków później my też – z tych samych powodów – nawróciliśmy się” – podkreślili konwertyci.

Dodali, że są w pełni świadomi trudnej sytuacji duszpasterskiej, jaka panuje obecnie i wszystkich wyzwań stojących przed ojcami synodalnymi, zwłaszcza w kwestii udzielania sakramentów dla rozwiedzionych katolików. – „Niektórzy z nas – zwracają uwagę – doświadczyło bólu rozwodu i praktycznie każdy z nas ma znajomych lub bliskich krewnych, którzy zostali dotknięci rozwodem.  Dlatego jesteśmy wdzięczni, że zwrócono uwagę na problem, który wyrządza tak ogromne szkody mężom i żonom, dzieciom i kulturze w ogóle”.

Nawróceni wyjaśnili, że piszą list ze względu na obawy dotyczące niektórych propozycji zmiany dyscypliny Kościoła na rzecz udzielania Komunii dla katolików, którzy są rozwiedzeni i ponownie ożenieni. „Jesteśmy szczerze zaskoczeni – czytamy – wnioskami tych, którzy proponują drogę pokuty, która będzie tolerować to, na co Kościół nigdy nie pozwalał. W naszej ocenie nie da się usprawiedliwić propozycji, które wyrządzą szkodę nierozerwalności więzi małżeńskiej”.

Autorzy listu dodali, że jakiekolwiek zmiany w tym zakresie będą niezgodne z doktryną o małżeństwie. Konwertyci przestrzegli duchownych, którzy chcą wprowadzić „nowinki” pod pretekstem okazania większego miłosierdzia osobom mającym nieuregulowaną sytuację życiową. Wyjaśnili, że „dobre intencje pasterskie,” które nie uwzględniają prawdy o tym, jak mają się rzeczy, jedynie pogorszą sytuację i przysporzą jeszcze więcej bólu oraz cierpienia tym, którym rzekomo starają się to cierpienie i ból złagodzić.

Autorzy listy podkreślają, że nie można zapominać o opuszczonych małżonkach i dzieciach, które wchodząc w wiek dorosły nie będą miały motywacji, by wspierać piękno nierozerwalności więzi małżeńskich.

Konwertyci uważają, że ci, którzy składają propozycje o udzielaniu sakramentów rozwodnikom żyjącym w kolejnych związkach nie rozumieją albo nie biorą pod uwagę prawdziwego źródła kryzysu rodziny, wynikającego właśnie z upowszechnienia rozwodów, antykoncepcji, współżycia pozamałżeńskiego i akceptacji dla związków tej samej płci.

Przywołują słowa Benedykta XVI z grudnia 2012 roku, wygłoszone z okazji Bożego Narodzenia dla członków Kurii Rzymskiej. Papież mówił o „fałszywym rozumieniu ludzkiej wolności, która podważa samo pojęcie bytu.”  

Autorzy listu przestrzegają przed kapitulacją wobec „kultury rozwodu.” W ich opinii kapitulacja taka dokonałby się wtedy, gdyby ojcowie synodalni podważyli niezmienną doktrynę o małżeństwie. Konwertyci proszą, by duchowni zdecydowanie bronili idei nierozerwalności małżeństwa, by pozostali wierni Prawdzie, której nauczał Chrystus i z tym samym zapałem jak uczniowie Chrystusa wiele wieków temu odważnie o niej świadczyli.

„Niech Kościół po raz kolejny przypomni światu o pięknie wierności małżeńskiej, gdy małżonkowie żyją w jedności z Chrystusem – apelują. Dodali, że „teraz bardziej niż kiedykolwiek świat potrzebuje proroczego świadectwa Kościoła!”

Pod listem podpisali się między innymi: Bryan Atkinson, były anglikanin, prof. Francis J. Beckwith, były członek kościoła ewangelickiego, prof. Philip Bess, wykładowca architektury na uniwersytecie Notre Dame, prof. J Budziszewski z uniwersytetu stanowego w Teksasie, liczni byli członkowie wspólnoty episkopalnej, pielęgniarki, nauczyciele, uczeni z renomowanych uniwersytetów np. Thomas F.
